Respected elders, teachers, parents, friends and dearest children:
I feel greatly honoured on being offered this opportunity to address all of you. The subject is vast and the time at my disposal is limited. So naturally I have to hasten so that you listen what I say giving adequate thoughts to identify the relevant and the irrelevant.
The task of the parents and teachers in childcare is more or less identical and complementary. What parents do with perfection on guiding their children right, make a teacher’s task easy? The same rule applies to teachers too in supplementing to the parents’ task. The children of character and talents are the results of the total toil of dedicated parents at home and committed teachers at school. If children at the formative years are taken good care of and guided judiciously, they will surely grow as good children to the parents, good students to the school and good citizens to the country to be proud of by all.
Yesterday in preparation of this address, I wanted to picture an ideal teacher in my mind. I went through the faces and qualities of my teachers of the past who along with my parents made me qualified to stand before you now. First let me tell you that I am proud of all my teachers who made the institutions they served proud. I am proud of my parents who devoted their time and attention to guide me through thick and thin, who steered my upbringing throughout to qualify for a career that is useful to society and enable me to shower compassion on those who in grief seeks my humble assistance. With these basic qualities planted in my childhood and God’s gift of a loving and understanding husband I run a home in perfect harmony. What qualities I inherited from my parents and what my teachers have taught me in my formative years and professional career along with God’s profound blessings on me together with my husband’s limitless love and affection make me attend to my profession and simultaneously run my home with a certain amount of satisfaction. I am indeed proud of it. My parents instilled in me the qualities of compassion and humility. My teachers enlightened me with professional knowledge to suit my profession. Timely compassion and professional perfection - these I consider as the gifts and blessings I have received in abundance from my parents and teachers. These are my precious possessions, which can cause envy in others.
Teachers are much above me in knowledge of what makes a good teacher. Still, let me express myself of my expectations of a teacher. As I have told you earlier I have in my mind pictured a teacher - likeable and loveable to all and by all. The first thing I observed in the teacher was a graceful, pleasant smile - an exact replica of my mother. Both students and parents look for that look on a teacher. I never had a frowning teacher in my life. So I could not picture one like that. Even in my primary classes, I have never come across a teacher holding a stick to beat or throwing out books and going on with such tantrums. My teachers were all very patient, understanding and committed to their profession and were good role models. They were accessible all the time to clear any doubts arising in my mind on certain topics. They were humble in disposition and friendly in their approach to students. They were never intolerant on mistakes committed by me in the course of my studies and they will on asking rush to help in correction. Most of my teachers believed that a stern look make up for corporal punishment. I am proud of my teachers and they along with my parents and abundant blessings from God made me what I am today. And great men of character and qualities are the results of combined efforts of parents and teachers. So Children, love and respect your teachers and parents. Never forget the fact that parents gave us life and parental effort to carve a successful and worthwhile life needs to be supplemented and complemented by our teachers. As I remember my teachers now, I salute with absolute respects all the teachers assembled here and teachers of character, conviction and commitment all over the world. I bow before you and seek your blessings.
Now let me narrate what I expect of parents. I am both a parent and a Doctor by profession. You will appreciate how difficult it is to manage my duty as a parent and do justice to a responsible healing profession. My husband and I cooperate one another and do justice to both. As most of you think my profession is not an enviable one. Day in and day out we plan our twin tasks of attending to patients and attending to children’s needs and do both with near perfection. For this, first, I thank God and then we both thank our parents who have devoted their care on us through timely guidance and directions. You children, write in your heart that parental love and affection towards you have no equals, as these are natural instincts gifted by God. Let parents understand that in looking after their children, there are no sacrifices involved and the term ‘sacrifice’ is a misnomer. You are just fulfilling a responsibility the Creator had assigned to you by gifting you a child. With the arrival of a child you start on a mission that ends only in the graves. When you finish the job and prepare him to look after himself alone, his life starts and the success and failure to a great extent depends on your initial training.
As in the case of depicting the picture of a teacher I depicted a father and mother in my mind. And soon two persons lined up in front of me. You wonder who they were. That faces I saw for years uninterrupted till my marriage. The portraits were of my father and mother. I remember how earnest and committed they were in their parenting task. To educate us and bring us up they had to forego many comforts - sometimes even basic comforts. This they did it without complaints taking it as a journey on roads, sometimes rough and harsh. Every day I remember them and my teachers in my thanksgiving prayers. Loving parents are rare gifts from God to His loving ones. My parents’ responsibilities were well defined. My mother looked after home and my father looked for means to run the home. They found enough time to give us company and friendship and help us through our studies. When I do something wrong or quarrel with my brother my father used to sport a stern look. That was enough to frighten me. My mother was an affectionate mother - not the spoiling affection variety. We - my husband I - are exact replicas of our parents. Besides respecting our sentiments they showered love and affection on us. They never scolded us in front of others. They never had temper tantrums. Their patience was exemplary. To our friends they were as friendly as we were. They were respectful to our teachers and cooperated with them in our learning interests. They never used to talk ill of others in our presence. They may have criticized others, but never in our presence. They gave us confidence to shoulder responsibility, which has helped me deeply in my present profession. While keeping reasonable limits from children they taught us fundamental values underlying basic human decency. They have fostered our self-respect and self-esteem and connected as to family history, family and cultural heritage of our country. They by example showed how polite one should be and how one should observe basic etiquettes to be respected by others. Every moment in my life I thank God for gifting me the greatest treasures of my life, my parents, my loving husband and sweet children.
I have gone past my time and I drastically have to cut short my talk. Coming to the qualities of the children I would include qualities such as honesty, compassion, courage, kindness, self-control, cooperation, diligence or hard work and all the qualities that one needs to both lead a fulfilling life and to be able to live together harmoniously and productively. Such children only, I call gifted children and these children make their schools, teachers, home and parents proud and happy. They stand tall and make their progeny taller in the community.I once again thank you for this honour conferred on me and I talked to you what came on in my mind without any reservation. Please remember me in your prayers. (The text of an address made in a School by Dr. Ammu)
